Best practice design solutions for specific user-focused tasks and page types

Bullets and numbered lists

Bullets and numbered lists can be added using the toolbar in the WYSIWYG editor.

Bulleted lists

This guidance follows the GOV.UK style guidance for bullet points.

When to use a bulleted list

Use bullet points to write lists of related content or to break down complicated sentences.

All bulleted lists should start with a lead-in sentence.

Example

If you are finding it difficult to look after yourself and manage everyday tasks, you can contact us to discuss your care and support needs. The discussion will identify:

  • if you need care and support
  • the level of care and support you need
  • how these could be met
  • your family and social support networks

Note: bullet points start with a lower case letter, as it is considered a run-on from the lead in line.  There are no full stops at the end of bullets points.

Numbered lists

Use numbered lists to describe an ordered process, or to guide a user through a process. You do not need a lead-in line and each point starts with a capital letter. Steps end in a full stop because each should be a complete sentence.

Example

How to apply for a Blue Badge

  1. Check eligibility.
  2. Gather supporting documents.
  3. Register for an account.
  4. Login to your account.
  5. Complete your application.

If a process is complicated or long, it may be better to use a Step-by-Step content type.
