Schools inspire Essex students to join construction industry

Students gather round tables with tablets and computers to learn about construction.

Three schools have launched a five-year programme introducing young people to construction.

Building a Lasting Legacy (BaLL) inspires more students to consider careers in construction. It is being piloted in Chelmsford at:

  • Hylands School
  • The Boswells School
  • The Sandon School

Over 100 Year 9 students have so far taken part in workshops to learn about construction. This includes modern practices and sustainable building methods.

Students will be able to explore different career paths over the next five years. They will have access to work experience, mentoring and special events.

We have provided £10,000 in funding and support to BaLL through our Employment and Skills Team. We are leading the initiative with Morgan Sindall and the Greater Essex Careers Hub.

Along with 20 Essex construction businesses, our partners include:

  • Chelmsford College
  • The Careers and Enterprise Company
  • Anglia Ruskin University

One participant said: “It has broadened my perspective of job opportunities in construction”.

Another said: “I found what job I want to pursue in the future.”

BaLL aims to change outdated perceptions of the construction industry. It also seeks to create a more diverse workforce for Essex’s growing construction sector.

Councillor Tony Ball, our Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Employability, said: “Building a Lasting Legacy is a fantastic initiative. It will open doors for many young people in Essex and we are excited to be involved.

"Students who may never have considered a career in construction now have the chance to explore the industry and gain valuable skills for their future.”
