Essex councils unite to scrap fly tipping

Chelmsford council chambers with several busy roundtables facing large screens.

We are supporting local Essex councils to tackle fly tipping together.

Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste on land which doesn’t have a waste licence. This could include leaving items by a bin, closed charity shop or recycling centre.

Household waste was found in over 60% of fly tips across Essex in the past three years. It cost taxpayers around £1 million to clean up in 2022/23

The new campaign is being supported by the Environment Agency and Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner. It will help residents dispose of household waste responsibly. Local councils will also work to increase visible enforcement and share intelligence.

The participating councils are:

  • Basildon Borough Council
  • Braintree District Council
  • Brentwood Borough Council
  • Chelmsford City Council
  • Colchester City Council
  • Epping Forest District Council
  • Harlow Council
  • Maldon District Council
  • Rochford District Council

Our Climate Czar, Councillor Peter Schwier, said: “Fly tipping is not only an eyesore. It’s harmful for the environment, endangers wildlife and costs taxpayers.

“Through this campaign, we want to make it easier to get rid of waste. Either with a council service or through a licenced waste collector. Let’s work together to keep Essex clean.”
