Extraordinary Essex – building green schools for the future

Four people in hi-vis and helmets look to the window in a classroom being built.

We are proudly celebrating our county by shining a spotlight on the people that make it special. This is Extraordinary Essex and it includes our Infrastructure Delivery team.

Eco-friendly schools are no longer a luxury. They are a standard our Infrastructure Delivery team take care to build.

This includes the 420-place Limebrook Way Primary School and Nursery. The school opened in September 2024 with solar panels arrays, air source heat pumps, thermal walls and more to reduce carbon emissions.

Adam Hathaway, Engineering & Technical Manager, explained: “A lot of the focus on these buildings is to make sure they are very thermally efficient. You’re only heating the spaces you need.”

For Tom Wint, Framework Cost & Quality Manager, putting time and care into green builds is a matter of looking to the future. He said: “My dad got me into the construction industry and now I’ve got a little girl, it’s nice to know I will have an impact on the world she’s going to be growing up in 10 or 15 years’ time.

“Limebrook has been a project two-and-a-half years in the making. To finally get to this point is really rewarding. You feel like there’s been a lot of hard work from everyone.”

A wildflower meadow has also been planted next to the sports field in the school grounds. Ella Shuttleworth, Sustainability Manager at developer Morgan Sindall, explained the decision: “It’s improved biodiversity by 13%. It makes a real impact.

“The sustainable operation we’ve put into Limebrook isn’t just about meeting a target or ticking a box. Essex deserves sustainable buildings.

“The output we’ve had from the team and the way the team has embraced sustainability has been extraordinary.”

Ryan Liversage, Area Director at Morgan Sindall, is looking to change the status quo through his work. He said: “Construction is one of the worst industries for the environment. So it’s about changing that narrative, changing people’s mindsets, understanding what we can do to make it eco-friendly.

“For me, I was raised in Essex. It’s really key that as an area director in Essex, I give something back to the county.”
