A class of Year 4 students took part in a maths-themed baking lesson this week as part of our Essex Year of Numbers initiative.
In celebration of National Baking Week, pupils at St Thomas More’s School in Colchester have been busy baking and decorating cakes, whilst learning about the importance of maths in everyday life.
The unique baking lesson was hosted by Assistant Headteacher and Venn Essex Maths Hub lead, Natalie Banthorpe, and delivered by Year 4 Class teacher, Rebecca Duncan. Students learned how to weigh ingredients, measure volumes and calculate baking times as part of the lesson.
Councillor Tony Ball, Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Employability at ECC, said:
By taking maths out of the classroom and into the kitchen, we’re bringing numbers to life, making learning fun, and providing children with the skills they need for future employment.”
Rebecca Duncan, said: “The feedback from the students has been hugely positive, they’ve been excited to learn about maths in a new environment.
“The skills they’ve learnt from this lesson are ones they will be able to take away and use when they are at home, in their everyday life.”
The Essex Year of Numbers gives young people, parents and carers the tools and knowledge they need to improve numeracy skills. It also aims to develop a love of numbers through fun and exciting events and activities.
