Essex remembers: honouring Remembrance Day 2024

Huddle of men and women in black winter coats observe a minute's silence at a service in County Hall, Chelmsford.

This coming Monday marks 106 years since the end of World War I.

Remembrance Day is a chance to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the armed forces. No matter how much time has passed.

Essex, with its rich military heritage and renowned regiments, will be paying tribute to the brave men and women who have given their lives.

There will be memorial services and parades across the county. This includes military bands, dignitaries and street decorations. Visit your local council’s website for ways to participate.

Jill Reeves, our chairman, will lead a service from the steps of County Hall in Chelmsford at 11am on 11 November. She said: “This is a time when we can all remember those who bravely sacrificed their lives for their fellow countrymen. Please join me for this very special service.”

This year, we are proud to present the Armed Forces Needs Assessment (AFNA). This provides an in-depth overview of the key issues faced by the armed forces community in Essex.

The AFNA is testament to our commitment to understanding and addressing the unique needs of our armed forces community. We aim to enhance the support and services available to those who have served our country.

Our leader, Councillor Kevin Bentley, said: “My aim is for Essex to be the best local authority in the country. Central to this is our commitment to supporting all members of our community. This includes our Armed Forces.

“In 2012, we signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant. This is one of the largest ever made by public, private and voluntary sectors. It is a pledge to ensure those who have served and currently serve in the armed forces, whether regular or reserve, as well as their families face no disadvantage compared to others.

“Essex has long been a proud military county with a rich heritage. This reflects its significant contributions to national defence and security. During the Battle of Britain, the airfield at RAF North Weald played a crucial role in the defence of the United Kingdom. It served as a base for fighter squadrons.

“The historic Colchester Garrison, established in 1855, remains one of the British Army’s oldest and most important garrisons. It houses various units and contributes to the operational readiness of the armed forces.

“The 16th Air Assault Brigade, who are based at Merville Barracks, played a crucial role in Afghanistan. They conducted numerous operations to support stability and security in the region.

“During World War II, parts of Harwich were also requisitioned for naval use. Ships were based at HMS Badger, a shore establishment on the site of what is now Harwich International Port.

“Across Essex, we have over 4,000 currently serving armed forces personnel and over 43,000 veterans. To ensure we are effectively supporting this community, we published an important piece of research – the Armed Forces Needs Assessment.”
