Council contributes to Dementia in the Commonwealth report

We have contributed to an important new publication on dementia care and support across the Commonwealth.

Brought together by CommonAge, the Commonwealth Association for the Ageing, Dementia in the Commonwealth was published last week.

It is believed to be the first report on dementia focussing on Commonwealth countries.

The report:

  • explores the state of dementia care and support
  • highlights disparities and challenges
  • showcases best practices
  • highlights the need for urgent action to improve the lives of those affect by dementia

The report involved research and collaboration with experts, people living with dementia, healthcare providers, and carers. It also showcases successful models of care across the Commonwealth as templates for improvement.

It highlights some of the work taking place in Essex, including the Essex Intergenerational Age-Friendly Programme. This is a range of age-friendly activities engaging young and older people, designed to connect older people with services and their community. Part of this is the Essex Age-Friendly Collaborative Toolkit, a user-friendly resource to inspire, showcase, and encourage more ideas to bring generations together.

The report also highlights initiatives such as Inclusive Dementia Communities Programme and the Community360 Dementia Hour in Essex.

Councillor John Spence, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Integration, said:

As this report sets out, this is about developing strong partnerships, throughout the public and voluntary sector, and beyond.  It is about always wanting to listen and learn from those with lived experience – to hear what we are doing well and, especially, where we need to do more – and not be too concerned with who gets the credit, but to have a collective focus on clear outcomes.

Our Dementia Strategy was launched two years ago. In commending the examples of our work set out in the report, I recognise our need constantly to be looking to build on this and, as demographic pressures continue to grow, never lose that vital focus on those we all wish to support – ensuring they have the care they need.

So many of us have been affected by dementia in some way, shape or form.  And many will know the real devastating impact it can have. We are on the side of all those living with dementia; committed to making sure that they, together with the family and friends that support them, have the best possible support services to lean on.
