We are looking for independent people with the right skills and experience to help make a difference.

Roles available

There is one vacancy as an Independent Member of our Audit, Governance and Standards Committee.

This committee looks after internal audit, external audit, Councillor standards of behaviour and a number of similar issues.

There are ten councillors on the committee representing all our political groups. The Independent Member is a non-voting member of the committee who brings audit knowledge to the work of the council.

For this role it would be an advantage to have experience in finance or audit at a senior level.

The committee meets in Chelmsford, between five and seven times a year.

There are also two vacancies as Independent Persons for Councillor Standards.

For these roles we are looking for people who can advise us about councillor behaviour.

Councillors are required to comply with the code of member conduct. Every complaint about councillor misconduct is considered by an Independent Person to let us know their view about the complaint. The work is usually done by email or telephone, but may very rarely involve travel to Chelmsford for a meeting.

Independent Persons will typically be asked to consider between two and five cases a year.

They may be sent at short notice and we normally ask independent persons to be able to consider cases within a week.

Independent Persons cannot be an officer or councillor of Essex County Council or a relative or close friend of any such person.

What we are looking for

For all roles we are looking for people that have:

  • strong personal integrity
  • a commitment to equality and diversity
  • an ability to act independently and objectively
  • ability to analyse complex information.
  • good interpersonal skills
  • ability to make sound decisions.

How to apply
