First, what is Theraplay?
Theraplay is a playful therapy, between children and their foster carers. It offers connection, through the simple act of playing together. Clare explains what happens in a Theraplay session and how it helps children.
The first step is a recorded play session
This is called a Marschak Intervention Method, a MIM. The play session between the foster carer and child includes a series of fun, simple games.
This first session shares insight into how foster carers are connecting with children. And vice versa, we see how the child responds to the connection. After completing the MIM, a therapist will draft a customised plan. Then, this plan is shared with the foster carer and we will start weekly sessions together.
Theraplay, and your custom sessions, focus on four key elements. Structure, engagement, nurturing and challenging.
Clare, as a Foundational Theraplay Therapist, runs sessions
Clare joins foster carers and their children (from 2 - 16 years old) in weekly sessions. An added bonus of Theraplay is involving the foster carer in the sessions too. Being alongside each other encourages attachment.
If you're considering Theraplay
Please ask your supervising social worker (SSW) for a consultation with a mental health co-ordinator (MHC). Then, we can discuss your child's needs, and how we can meet them. This gives us information on whether Theraplay is the right choice, or if there's another intervention to explore.
Reach out to your SSW first, then we're here to help your family.
