Solicitor requesting a client's personal data

An individual may ask a solicitor to make an information request on their behalf.

Solicitors are required to validate the identity of their clients. To make a request on a client’s behalf, the you must provide evidence of their client’s consent for you to access their personal data.

If the information is about a client’s children you will need to provide evidence that your client holds parental responsibility. If the child is aged 12 or older you will also need to provide their written consent.

We are not required to process a solicitor’s request if evidence of consent from the data subjects is not provided.

If the information is sensitive we may contact the client to discuss it first. If the client agrees, we may send the response to them. They can then choose to share the information with their solicitor.

To request information about another adult, you will need to provide:

  • your full name
