New community supermarkets will be opening in Colchester and Canvey Island. We have announced the appointment of the delivery partners to run both shops.
Community supermarkets are non-profit and follow a model designed by Feeding Britain. They are different from food banks. Customers are able to shop freely, choose what they spend their money on, and receive a discount on their purchases. Stores provide all basic essentials and some fresh produce and household items.
The Salvation Army in Canvey Island will establish a new mobile community supermarket. The organisation will be fitting out a double decker bus with food and household items. It will then be able to travel to many locations across the town.
Greenstead in Colchester will also see the opening of a brand-new community shop. The Divine Assembly Ministries will run the new store.
Both are set to open this autumn.
The new partners have been appointed as part of a community collaborative, working alongside colleagues in the local town, borough and city councils, as well as local foodbanks, community groups and national experts Feeding Britain. The collaboration will ensure the new services are designed to meet the exact needs of the local residents.
We have provided funding for the new community supermarkets. They follow similar stories in Laindon and Jaywick Sands.
